Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring March and Invention (10 arranged by Leo Welch) uses Bach’s own process of transcription as a model. Bach arranged many of his more musically complex works for lute, violin, or cello. As he arranged, he made decisions that reduced the textural complexity of the work while retaining its original musical intent, which was very much in keeping with the Baroque aesthetic of arranging music for the available situation. The simplified texture of a guitar ensemble trio format–where the primary obligato melody is in part one while the higher choral lines are placed divisi in the second part and the independent bass line from the original is contained in part three, retaining the charm of the original version. Also in keeping with Bach’s original intent the idiomatic key of G major is used thus creating an idiomatic guitar arrangement that is engaging and accessible by a guitar ensemble of varying ability levels.
